Vicki Lampros

Artist Statement

Vicki Lampros has been painting since her earliest memories. She was captivated by the works of Monet, Matisse, Cezanne, Cassat, and other Impressionists as a child growing up in the Midwest. Magic and fantasy always held a greater appeal to her creative mind than the more mundane realities of life in Kansas so she says she grew up in the “Land of Oz “. In the years after graduating from Hesston College near her hometown she developed a love for primitive art forms from all over the world; Africa and India in particular but the archetypal symbolism used in a myriad of cultures from the Celts to ancient Japan. Her lifelong fascination with the organic shapes and textures of nature led her to learn the ancient art of felting wool from her dear friend and mentor, Gika Rector – a fiber artist and personal coach of The Woodlands, TX . Felting as well as her hobby of portrait photography inspires many of Vicki’s acrylic and mixed media pieces. She works from intuition, dreams, emotional and spiritual work and simply a love of color which has survived from the day her kindergarten teacher showed her how to mix blue and yellow tempura to create green. “My heart soared when I witnessed that miracle,” she says. “I still feel that thrill every time I paint. I’ve never developed a clear direction or goal for my work because I believe the painting comes from somewhere else and exists to inform and direct intuitively. When I have attempted to direct my art in the past it has always turned its back on me so now I have learned to let it direct me and try not to question what comes out of that process.”
